So I got a BSOD (blue screen of death, ubiquitous in windows) today. No big deal, and then rebooted. It gave me a hard stop, and said it wouldn’t read the disk. So I booted a live CD, and that wouldn’t start up either. So it wasn’t the HD. I open up the casing, and take out the ram (which had failed once, and been replaced by the same model), and sure enough it booted right up. Slowly, but it booted. So I called up the place that I bought it from, but the warranty was only 1 year from the invoice, which was january 2005… so that was no good. They were selling it for $60-some for a new stick, but after 2 failures, I wasn’t really willing to go that road again.
So I can’t live with 256 mb of ram.
Enter google. I googled for a stick of micron brand (good) ram, and found a place online that sold the right size and form factor for my lappy, and it was $80-some, but the kicker is that it was free shipping, and lifetime warranty! So I bought it. I’m hoping it’ll get here before I leave for LA.
Warning: solicitation imminent
So… I bought it from MemorySuppliers.com, who has a high rating on ResellerRatings.com, and seem to know what they’re doing. They also sell high-quality branded ram for cheap. They are out of the Chicago area, and you have a plethora of shipping options. Not to mention the lifetime warranty. We’ll see how long it takes to ship.
UPDATE: It shipped today at 3 PM. Not bad at all.
