Got back earlier tonight. I feel like I accomplished something this week, because of the traveling that we all did.
I guess there was a day 0, in which I hung out with al stien, sam grooms, and carrie bishop. I have updated the post to reflect this.
Day 0: Woke up to al calling me at 10AM. Way too early for me to be up. She and her crew wanted to go to the coors brewery in golden, CO. I said I'd go with her. Mandy was sick that day, and skipped classes, and didn't feel up to the trip. So Al, Sam and Carrie picked me up at my apartment, and we drove down to golden. The brewery tour was pretty interesting… It smelled like gerbil cages all throughout the building and the 100 yards surrounding the plant. I think it was the hops. Anyway, sam is pretty funny. We had some good jokes going on about keystone and its origins. Also, blue moon tastes like they brewed it with hot dogs instead of hops. One item of great import is we got carrie bishop to try a sip of our beers. She hated every last one of them. We walked around golden after the tour, and came upon a store called
Foss Mercantile. There were a few pinball machines in there, and sam decided she would play the
downtown game. She put in a quarter, and played for about 15 minutes. By the end of the 5th minute, she was ready to lose. What made the game so long was the uptown part of the game, where you can't lose, and you just sit there pushing the flipper button, waiting for something to happen so you can go back downtown. Yeah, whoever designed that game was an idiot. Went back outside, and got some ice cream from this shop, where al thought the lady running the place was having a smoke out back. Went to mandy's apartment, where we just sat around and talked for a while. Then they took me back to my apartment. Packed and planned how ryann was going to pick me up the next day. I reminded her that chicago has a one-hour time difference from indiana. She had not realized this. Slept.
Day 1: get up in the ealy early morning, ride the bus to the airport. Wait around for the flight to depart, realize that I'm going to be sitting next to a 19-month old and his mom. Sweet. He was cute, but kind of a screamer. Really curious about everything though. I think I want a kid. Arrive in O'Hare, wait 15 minutes for the gate to open up so we can get off the dang plane. Begin the walk to the CTA station in O'Hare. Ride the blue line to the loop, get off at Clark, transfer to the orange, ride that to randolph and then get on the metra electric line to university park. Chicago is an interesting city. The blue line sure has some nice views. Also, Chicago has black people. Make sure that Ryann knows to pick me up… Seem to be good on that count. Finally arrive at the 211th st. metra station, where ryann was going to pick me up. She was at the front of the platform, and I was on the first car, so we were on opposite sides of the platform. Finally figured that out, and got a hug, and we were off to lafayette. I played her some of sufjan's
michigan; and the talking heads'
remain in light. I think she liked it. Not as much as a triumph as over the rhine was though. Made her eat dinner with alex and I at penn station, and go to small group leaders' meeting late. I'm such a bad influence… Hung out with alex for a while before iv large group. Matt and I were there pretty early with alex, so we helped get some chairs from another group. In the elevator, I guessed that the group we were taking chairs from was the dungeons and dragons club. I was right.
some other word that I don't remember. Yeah, I know the meeting rooms of campus groups a bit too well. At large group the speaker was talking about barbie, and how she wanted barbie to hoo… get together with ken, but her barbie was ugly. Went shopping at meijer with matt, planned with janice what we were going to do for day 2, and after returning to matt's and listening to some music fell asleep.
Day 2: Woke up and went to janice's. The plan was for todd to come and pick us up to drive to janice's in cincinnati. That went off pretty well. Except that matt forgot to go to class that morning. The conversation was pretty intense, on todd and matt's part, mine was a bit off and stupid. Typical conversation with phil. You know. Got to janice's without a hitch, and met her in her apartment parking lot. We went to the Kohl Conservatory near the kentucky-ohio border. It's a beautiful interesting place over there. Later, matt and I threw disc while janice and todd walked around and talked at a park. We didn't really know what else to do, so we decided to eat dinner. Japanese food at a nice little place close to janice's apartment. We took a long time to decide what to get, and the waiter was more than helpful in suggesting what's good. I ordered a bottle of sake to go with my steak, cooked medium-rare. Also ate some sushi, which was not that bad, save for the seaweed. Vile stuff, seaweed; just tastes like the sea. We went back to janice's place to hang out, and just ended up talking for a while, waiting for
lost; to come on. I didn't know one of the characters' name was john lock. Matt and I found that to be quite amusing, and made some jokes about inalienable rights during the show. We then played a game of scattergories, and quickly tired of it. The rest of the night was a drunken debauchery, which included lots of lime to mask the taste of the corona that we bought (woo, spring break). Mike Erikson (I never knew how to spell his name) came over for a little while, and we talked about his work and love and stuff like that. Ended the night with some good jokes about sleeping arrangements.
Day 3: Drove back to purdue from cincinnati, so that matt could get some stuff done before he had to be at work, or a meeting, or something like that. Todd and I hung out for that morning/afternoon because he couldn't work on senior design (hammer time). We took showers and went to eat lunch with bobby. Didn't know what else to do, so just walked around for a while, came up with a hair-brained scheme to climb the bell-tower (or at least one of its feet). I could hoist myself up onto the first concrete step, but then the rest were a bit hard to reach due to the necessity to leap to catch the next rung. Yeah, I'm a chicken. Alex came by and we went for a bike ride for about half an hour. I was the least prepared, and wore my jeans. No helmet. Todd's old roadie. I was the slow-poke. Ate with todd in earhart dining hall, and met matt there for the second half of the meal. Matt introduced me to his new friend, Abby. We had to go to HMS Pinafore, so we left at around 7:10. Got to Loeb Playhouse a few minutes before it started, and got our seats with plenty of time to settle in. The opera was pretty good, save for a sporatically flat Josephine and a mediocre Ralph. Sir Joseph was great. Strange how a comedic opera can still be so funny one-hundred some-odd years later. Our night ended with a conversation with ryann about getting free jimmy john's. This never came to fruition.
Day 4: Woke up a little late but no matter. No real plans until later, when ryann and I were going to play nintendo. Called alex, as matt was leaving for meetings/work. Went to pick up katie, and ate at potbelly's. While there, ryann called and we tried to persuade her to come eat with us. Didn't work, but the conversation ended with,
hold on, I'll call you back, I think someone just hit me. She was driving at the moment, and some guy in a large old oldsmobile clipped her front quarter-panel. She called back a little while later, and I bought her a sandwich to take to her to make up for being so not understanding when she got hit. Apparently the guy just ran off and didn't stop to exchange info or whatever. So katie, alex, and I got to ryann's with a sandwich to see her talking to the responding police officer. The damage to her car wasn't too bad, but was noticeable. A little paint on the bumper, and a dented front quarter-panel. Watched
labyrinth because I hadn't seen it before. Funny movie. Jim Henson movies are always (usually) good. Matt came over after work, and we talked for a little bit, then everybody left. Ryann and I went to the post office to mail a letter, and I got ryann a tank of gas for picking me up on tuesday. Went back to her apartment to hang out and maybe do something fun. On the way we picked up her sister. Our plan was to get some sour patch kids (yeah) and play some games, and watch jaws later on. Target it was, and two bags of sour patch kids were procured. Ryann and Hailey wanted to go to (evil) wal-mart to get them cheaper but we convinced them to just buy it at target. Saw some cool lightning in the distance (later to learn that it might've been a tornado). Got back, and started playing clue. Halfway through, todd joined us. Still later, matt won. Something else, and then jeff came over. We played trivial pursuit pop culture edition with the six of us. Pokemon and ant farms. Elisha Weaver joined later, and kicked abs on the movies. Matt, Jeff, Elisha and I won. On Angelina Jolie. Pizza hut pizza, then jaws. First time I'd ever seen it. It gave me insight to a number of simpsons references. Matt fell asleep halfway through, and ryann fell asleep about 3/4 of the way through. She is a heavy sleeper. I was poking her in the face and slapping her hand, and she was still out. Then Hailey started hitting her on the leg, and I think that woke her up. But ryann hit me really hard for waking her up. I thought it was funny. After the movie ended, everyone pretty much disbanded. Went to get my sweatshirt from todd's car, which took longer than expected. I think it was because jeff is such a goof-ball. Went back to matt's to sleep.
Day 5: Woke up at 10:30, had to leave by 11:30 to make it with enough time at o'hare. We went to a few places trying to see if we could get a quick oil-change, but no dice. Finally decided to just leave, at around 11:30, and so we drove to chicago. Matt dropped me off at the airport, and I checked in. Stupid United, overbooked the flight by 70-some people. So, there was a big seating fiasco, and a big hullabaloo over standby flyers. Finally, an hour late for take-off, we started to board the plane. Got onto the plane, and took my seat in 51C. 747-400s have a lot of rows. Funny that mandy's classmate, caroline had the window seat, 51A. Small world, huh. Anyway, we talked for a while with the woman between us, who had been visiting cedarville university in ohio, which caroline and I both had ties to. I fell asleep once we were in the air, and woke up to watch the stewardesses walk away with the drink cart. It was about this time that I got incredibly sad. I just started to think about how mean I was, and how I was a burden to people. It brought me to the point of tears. I am a sad person. So, I pretty much spent the rest of the flight holding back tears, and thinking about how much of a horrible person I am. Listened to disc 2 of OHIO loudly, and tried to not be sad, tried to convince myself that I wasn't hated by everyone in the world. Yeah, you'd have better luck trying to trying to drive a car through an oak tree. Got off the plane in denver, and called mandy. Mandy didn't see me when I came out of the little subway thingy, and walked away from me. This also made me sad. Anyway, this was pretty much the end of the trip, so I'll end it here.
Mandy and I talked about why I was so sad, and I still don't really have a solid explanation for it. I think it was because I was getting angry that the stewards didn't answer the call button, and didn't look back at all. Anyway, that was the impetus, but the real reason was probably my ingrained hatred for myself. Makes sense, huh? Yeah. I feel a bit better, but it's not great. Someone give me a phone call.
