I dreamt about soldering last night. Oh gosh. So I’m going to re-box a couple little amplifiers. They’re about 2″x.75″ each. It’s going to be kinda cool. Dunno. I hope this works…
A few weeks ago, I thought, “Instead of listening to an amp with a bad channel, why don’t I just buy an amplifier that’s cheap?” And so, some time later, I have purchased two Sonic Impact T-Amps. They’re kinda cool little low-power stereo class-D amplifiers. And from what I’ve heard, are the best deal in amplifier history.
Don’t read this unless you’re a nerd, or want to be one
Yes, I am a nerd. Class-D is a method in which the output devices are either on or off, and they are switched at a very high frequency. This signal is passed through a low-pass filter, so then all the high frequency crap is taken out, and what you’re left with is a nice sounding signal. It’s very efficient, at about 80%, so it’s eco-friendly.
Hopefully with my inefficient speakers at 86db/W @ 1m, I can use two t-amps and bi-amp them. Biamping will help this, so one amplifier does the low frequency, and one does the high frequency. So maybe I’ll have 10W/channel. The room I listen to it in is pretty small, so the load on the speakers is small. I might be able to get away with it. Crap… maybe you shouldn’t read this paragraph either. Too late… You’re in all the way now. But the bottom line is, I’m going to have an amplifier in a tiny little box. tiny little box. Awesome. And when I get the other one fixed finally, I can put one in the bedroom and let myself drift off to sleep to the sweet sweet sounds of Over the Rhine. Or Sufjan Stevens. Or Chopin. Or Tsaikovsky. Or Linford. Or The Ramones. Or Waterdeep. Or Elliott Smith. Or Beethoven. Or Heifetz. Or… crap… you don’t want to know any more. Wait! Come back! I’m not done yet!
Anyway, I’m excited about my new idea. And it’s all on order. Mostly. I still haven’t decided if I want to put a little active crossover and preamp in the system. That might change things a bit. And, if I want to put a preamp in it, then I might as well put a phono preamp in it too. Then it might be a tight squeeze. We’ll see. How about that.
